Keycap Layout and Kitting Definitions

Read before using layout definitions

The layouts defined below are in reference to the search fields in our Keycap Kitting Search Tool. They may vary slightly from other articles that cover keycap and keyboard layouts.

In the context of this website and it's tools the standard bottom row is the ANSI bottom row that has a 6.25u spacebar and 1.25u modifier keys. Some keyboards/layouts will use ANSI, some will use Tsangan and some even use others. In our Keycap Kitting Search Tool if you say looking for a keycaps that fit a Mr. Suit(TKL) that has a Tsangan bottom row, you'd search for TKL and Tsangan/WKL because searching for TKL would only ensure the rest of the layout not bottom rows.

100%
Keyboard

100% or Full Size keyboards are the most common keyboard layout. Not every keyboard that looks full-size uses the same keys. The image below shows a typical 100% keyboard. The keys in black are the F row keys. The keys in white are the alphas and esc key. Purple keys are mods. Army green is your nav cluster and the teal green is the number pad.

1800/96%
Keyboard

1800 or 96% keyboards are essentially a compact 100% keyboard. The keys usually lost in an 1800/96% layout are 5 of the Nav Cluster keys, leaving only the 4 outlined in army green above the number pad  in the image. Most keyboards let you choose which 4 you keep. The other change is instead of a 2.75u right shift most 1800/96% layouts have a 1.75u right shift as you can see next to the arrow cluster.

Also notice the keys in maroon in the bottom row, to the right of the spacebar. Many times in an 1800 or 96% keyboard these will be 1u as opposed to the standard ANSI 1.25u or Tsangan/WKL 1.5u bottom row keys.

1800 vs 96%

A 96% keyboard is just an 1800 layout keyboard without the spacing between the mods, number pad, and around the arrow keys.

TKL/80%
Keyboard

TKL stands for Ten Key Less. It's in reference to the fact that the ten key number pad and associated keys are removed from the layout. Sometimes also referred to as an 80% keyboard layout.
Make sure to take note of the bottom row in maroon in both images below. The first image shows a TKL with an ANSI bottom row. Many TKLs come with a Tsangan bottom row, as shown in the second picture below. When using our tools to search for keycaps that will fit a TKL board, make sure to also search for Tsangan support if your board has a Tsangan bottom row.

The image above is a TKL with an ANSI bottom row. Notice the 1.25u bottom row mods and 6.25u spacebar.

The image below is a TKL with a Tsangan bottom row. Notice the mix of 1.5u and 1u bottom row mods and 7u spacebar.

75%
Keyboard

A 75% keyboard layout has no number pad like a TKL and it also removes most of the other nav cluster keys. Most 75% keyboards will keep 3-4 of the nav cluster keys. Also notice the 1.75u right shift instead of the standard 2.75u.

Alice/ARISU

An Alice or Arisu keyboard layout is an ergonomic style of layout. The key groupings are split, but the keyboard itself is not. Pay attention to the 2.25u and 2.75u spacebars and the extra B.

HHKB
Keyboard

The HHKB or Happy Hacking Keyboard layout was invented by Dr. Eiiti Wada as the ideal layout for computer programmers.

The HHKB layout replaces the 1.75u Capslock with a 1.75u Control key, breaks up the 2u Backspace into a 1u \ key and 1u ~(sometimes delete) key, breaks up the 2.75u right shift into a 1.75u right shift and a 1u Fn(function) key.

The bottom row of a HHKB is essentially a Tsangan bottom row with the outer 1.5u mod keys removed.
